The short version

What you need to know.

  • Confirm eligibility and the delivery commitment with the dealer.
  • Compare an itemised driveaway quote, with the promotion clearly identified.
  • Check charging, insurance and everyday fit before choosing the variant.
01

Four grand helps. The final quote still matters.

BYD Australia is offering $4,000 cashback, including GST, on the Sealion 7 Premium and Performance. Eligible orders run from 1 October to 21 December 2026, with delivery required by 31 December. Fleet customers, demonstrators, service-loan vehicles and transactions involving other promotional offers or discounts are excluded.

That is useful money if this electric SUV was already on your shortlist. It is also a reason to get a fresh written quote, rather than subtracting four grand from an old screenshot and announcing victory. The calculator is innocent; the assumptions are usually where things go sideways.

02

Two deadlines, not one

Ordering before the closing date does not automatically satisfy the delivery condition. BYD says it may approve extensions individually for qualifying orders that cannot arrive in time. That is discretion, not a guaranteed grace period.

Before paying a deposit, ask the dealer to identify the actual car or allocation, expected delivery date and what happens if it slips. Get the agreed position recorded with the order. A cheerful estimate over the phone is not much help when you are trying to reconstruct the conversation in January.

Also ask how the cashback will be handled, when you receive its benefit and whether the quoted amount already includes it. Request a driveaway total with accessories, paint, delivery charges and the promotion clearly itemised. Keep your trade-in valuation separate so you can see what each part of the deal is doing.

03

Keep the finance banners in their own lane

The 0.99% comparison-rate finance promotion on BYD’s offers page does not list the Sealion 7 as eligible. The separate novated-lease offer should not be assumed to stack with cashback either.

If you are comparing ways to pay, ask for separate written proposals for the same vehicle and equipment. Look at the total amount payable, fees and any end-of-term amount, rather than comparing a weekly repayment with an upfront discount. A lower-looking number is not automatically a lower-cost purchase.

My preference would be to settle the car choice first, then compare the actual payment options available to you. Otherwise the promotion starts choosing the vehicle, which is a fairly expensive way to enjoy a special offer.

04

Premium or Performance is still a real choice

BYD lists the Premium as rear-wheel drive, with 230kW and 482km of claimed WLTP range. The Performance has all-wheel drive, 390kW and a 456km WLTP claim. Those are manufacturer test-cycle figures, not a promise about your next loaded highway trip.

The cashback does not decide which version fits your life. Compare insurance quotes for both, check replacement tyre costs and take a proper test drive. Try your normal parking manoeuvre, fit the child seats and use the controls while stationary. These checks tell you more about everyday ownership than another argument about acceleration.

Put charging into the budget as well. Ask an electrician what your parking space can support and price any installation separately. If public charging will do most of the work, check the locations, access and tariffs you would actually use.

A better deal on the right car

I would treat this as a useful opportunity to revisit a Sealion 7 quote, not a reason to rush into a car you had not considered. Compare the final driveaway amount with other suitable EVs, then add the ownership costs you can verify.

If the car suits, delivery is clear and the written numbers work, the discount has done its job. If those pieces do not line up, keeping your deposit is also a perfectly respectable saving.
