01Lawn size

Length × width gives a rough square-metre figure. Subtract the house, paving and garden beds.

Unknown size uses a conservative 500 m² planning placeholder. Measure before purchasing.
02How can it travel between lawns?

A mower can cross paving only when the manufacturer supports the route and it is safely mapped. It cannot climb steps or cross a road.

04How steep is it?

A 20% slope rises 20 cm over one horizontal metre. Wet buffalo, sandy soil and side slopes need more traction than a dry brochure test.

05Can it see the sky?

Satellite positioning likes open sky. LiDAR maps locally; cameras can bridge some weak spots. Dense canopy and narrow side access deserve a real site check.

06What setup suits the property?

All choices are wire-free. Some need a small reference station with sky view; others map using sensors on the mower.

Moving blades are never child- or pet-safe. Clear the lawn and do not allow interaction with an operating mower.

What ownership still involves

You will still trim some edges, clear sticks and toys, clean the mower, replace blades, rescue unusual failures, maintain the dock and manually move most models between disconnected lawns.

LiDAR, vision or RTK?

LiDAR

Onboard laser mapping works without a satellite antenna and is usually the safer starting point under trees or beside tall buildings. It still needs clear physical edges around drops and water.

RTK + vision

RTK delivers precise straight lines in open sky. Cameras help around weak spots and obstacles, but do not make every covered corridor reliable. Station position matters on models that use one.

Network RTK

Some mowers use a correction network instead of a station on the house. That simplifies hardware but introduces mobile-coverage and service-term questions.

AWD and tracks

Headline slope ratings are not the whole story. AWD helps on steep or uneven ground; tracks add traction and weight. Wet buffalo or soft soil can still reduce real-world grip.

Australian grasses

Buffalo and kikuyu are not compatibility badges. Dense growth needs cutting-height range, mowing frequency and motor headroom. Full rotary blades suit heavier work but add weight and risk.

Children and pets

Object detection reduces collisions; it does not make moving blades safe. Clear toys, sticks and hoses, schedule away from play time, and never encourage interaction.

Front and rear lawns

Virtual maps can include zones and paved transit routes, but a mower cannot climb steps or safely cross a road. Disconnected lawns usually still mean carrying it.

Edges and ownership

Expect some whipper-snipping, cleaning, replacement blades, dock maintenance and occasional rescue. No robot turns the lawn into a zero-maintenance appliance.

Wire-free residential models need Australian manufacturer or authorised-retailer evidence. Area and slope figures are manufacturer claims; confirm the exact model, warranty and included hardware.
