The short version
What you need to know.
- Telstra’s current support page says carrier RCS starts rolling out on compatible devices from 16 November 2026.
- Earlier Telstra guidance put iPhone support after December’s iOS release. That detail is not repeated on its current support page.
- RCS can improve photos, group chats and delivery information, but compatibility and encryption need checking for each conversation.
A useful upgrade, with a timetable to watch
Sending a decent photo to someone with a different brand of phone should not require a family meeting about which app everyone needs to download. Telstra’s carrier RCS rollout is a welcome step towards making ordinary messaging less awkward.
Telstra’s current support page says the rollout starts on compatible devices from 16 November 2026. That is a starting date, rather than a promise that every handset gets every feature that morning.
In EFTM’s 17 October report, Telstra said Android customers would begin on that date, with iPhone support following December’s iOS release and completion scheduled by year’s end. The current Telstra page does not repeat that specific iPhone timetable, so December remains earlier guidance rather than a newly confirmed guarantee.
What RCS actually changes
RCS stands for Rich Communication Services. It adds more capable messaging through a compatible messaging app, using Wi-Fi or mobile data. Think higher-quality photos and videos, typing indicators, read receipts and better group conversations.
Android owners may reasonably wonder why this sounds familiar. Google’s RCS FAQ explains that RCS can already be provided by Google or a mobile carrier. Rich messaging itself is not new to Australia. The news is Telstra’s carrier rollout and the prospect of broader compatibility, particularly between iPhone and Android.
On an iPhone, RCS messages remain green. The bubble-colour debate apparently has excellent battery life. The useful improvement is what the message can carry and show, rather than which colour Apple gives it.
Your mate’s phone still matters
Google says all participants need RCS for an RCS conversation. Having the feature on your phone cannot upgrade the other person’s device, app or service.
If the conversation falls back to ordinary SMS or MMS, do not expect the same receipts, media quality or privacy protections. Google Messages lets users control whether it automatically resends unavailable RCS messages as SMS or MMS.
That also makes sweeping claims about support across every Telstra-network provider unhelpful. If you buy your plan from another provider using the Telstra network, check that provider’s compatibility advice. Coverage branding alone is not a complete messaging feature list.
Included does not mean data-free
Telstra says eligible services will not attract an extra RCS fee. Messages still use Wi-Fi or mobile data, with larger photos and videos consuming more data. Overseas roaming charges may apply.
Privacy needs a closer look too. Apple’s current guidance says end-to-end encrypted RCS depends on supported service providers at both ends. An encrypted conversation shows an “Encrypted” label and lock icon. A green bubble on its own does not tell you that your message is encrypted.
Apple and Google began rolling out encrypted cross-platform RCS in beta in May. That broader development is separate from whether your particular Australian service is ready.
What to do now
Keep your phone and messaging app updated, check your provider’s instructions and look at the actual conversation status when support arrives. On Android, Google Messages shows RCS status under your profile icon, Messages settings, then RCS chats.
I would not change an otherwise suitable mobile plan on the promise alone. Price, coverage and reliability still matter every day. Once RCS works with the people you regularly message, however, this should be a genuinely useful improvement: less friction, better photos and one fewer reason to play family tech support.
